Editing isn’t quite as exhilarating as writing new words, but it’s just as critical. Right now, I’m neck-deep in editing my next novel, We Never Told. While I’m not putting down fresh pages at the moment, the editing process is just as time-consuming and rewarding, if not more so, in its own way. Today, I tackled a good portion of the first third of the manuscript, and I’m feeling the weight of the work—but also the sense of accomplishment that comes with it.
In terms of word count, it’s less about hitting big numbers and more about refining what’s already there. I’m constantly tweaking sentences, sharpening dialogue, and ensuring the pacing hits the right beats. It’s all about tightening up the narrative to make sure every scene drives the story forward, keeping the tension high and the stakes palpable. Editing is where the magic really happens, turning the raw draft into a polished novel.
Today, I focused on a particular section that has been a challenge. It’s one of those moments in the book that I know is crucial for the payoff later on, but I’ve had to tweak it several times to ensure it doesn’t feel too forced. I’m editing We Never Told with a lot of care because the themes in this story are so personal, and the way the narrative unfolds needs to feel authentic. The last thing I want is to lose the readers in the process!
That brings me to some of the challenges I faced today. Editing can often be a balancing act. On the one hand, I want every word to feel like it fits perfectly, but on the other hand, there’s the ever-present fear of over-editing and stripping away the raw emotion. Sometimes I have to remind myself that not every sentence needs to be perfect on the first pass. It’s okay to allow some flaws in the editing process—what matters is the overall arc of the story.
There’s also the looming Kickstarter for the book, which is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. If it goes well, I’ll be able to move forward with the professional editing, formatting, and cover design for the book. I’m really hoping to bring this story to life in the best possible way, and having a supportive community through Kickstarter could be a game-changer. But even if it doesn’t work out exactly as planned, I’m committed to getting this book out there one way or another.
If all goes according to plan, next month will be spent fine-tuning the final draft and working on the book’s design, so I can prepare for a March release. The editing process is tough, but seeing the story transform day by day makes it all worthwhile.
For any fellow writers out there reading this, I’d love to hear how you approach the editing process. Do you have any tips for staying motivated during the often-tedious rounds of revisions? And if you’re working on a project of your own, how do you balance the excitement of creation with the reality of polishing it up?
Thanks for following along on my editing journey—there’s still a long road ahead, but I’m so excited to see this story through to the end!
Happy reading and writing!
